Background of the Study
Primary healthcare (PHC) serves as the foundation of the health system, providing accessible and comprehensive care. In Katsina State, PHC centers are increasingly tasked with managing cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which have become a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. PHC providers play a crucial role in early detection, health education, and the management of risk factors associated with CVD (Usman, 2023; Gambo, 2024). Effective management at the PHC level not only reduces the burden on tertiary care facilities but also improves overall population health through timely interventions and continuous care.
Recent efforts to strengthen PHC services in Katsina State have focused on training healthcare workers, improving diagnostic capabilities, and integrating cardiovascular care into routine services. However, challenges remain in terms of resource allocation, infrastructure, and patient compliance. The integration of preventive care with chronic disease management in PHC settings has shown promising results in reducing CVD complications. This study will assess the effectiveness of primary healthcare in managing cardiovascular disease, examining how PHC interventions influence patient outcomes and the overall efficiency of the healthcare system (Ibrahim, 2023).
By analyzing both quantitative patient data and qualitative feedback from healthcare providers, the research aims to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current PHC model in Katsina State. The ultimate goal is to develop recommendations for enhancing cardiovascular disease management at the primary care level, thereby reducing the overall burden of heart disease in the region.
Statement of the Problem
Cardiovascular diseases continue to impose a heavy burden on the healthcare system in Katsina State. Despite the critical role of primary healthcare in managing these conditions, many PHC centers face challenges such as inadequate staffing, limited diagnostic tools, and inconsistent follow-up care. These limitations often result in delayed diagnosis and suboptimal management of cardiovascular risk factors (Abdulrahman, 2023).
Patients frequently encounter difficulties in accessing timely care, and the integration of preventive services with chronic disease management remains inconsistent. The lack of standardized protocols and insufficient training further exacerbate these challenges, leading to variable patient outcomes. This study aims to address these issues by evaluating the effectiveness of primary healthcare in the management of cardiovascular disease in Katsina State, identifying key barriers to effective care, and proposing strategies to optimize PHC services (Lawal, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of primary healthcare in managing cardiovascular disease in Katsina State.
2. To identify the challenges faced by PHC centers in delivering cardiovascular care.
3. To recommend strategies to improve PHC service delivery and patient outcomes in cardiovascular disease management.
Research Questions
1. How effective is primary healthcare in managing cardiovascular disease in Katsina State?
2. What are the major challenges faced by PHC centers in the management of cardiovascular conditions?
3. Which interventions can improve the efficiency and effectiveness of PHC services in managing CVD?
Research Hypotheses
1. Enhanced primary healthcare services are associated with better cardiovascular outcomes.
2. Resource limitations and inadequate training in PHC centers are significantly associated with poor CVD management.
3. Implementation of standardized protocols and continuous training improves PHC performance in cardiovascular care.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on selected primary healthcare centers in urban and rural areas of Katsina State. Data will be gathered from patient records, interviews with healthcare providers, and observational assessments. Limitations include potential variability in service quality across centers and reliance on self-reported data from staff and patients.
